Species On The Move 2026 The International Conference Species On The Move 2026 (SOTM 2026) took place in Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan, from April 20 to 24, 2026. This international conference is held every three years and focuses on how species and ecosystems respond to accelerating climate change across marine, freshwater, and terrestrial systems. It is a global platform that connects scientific research, conservation practice, and policy-making, while integrating indigenous knowledge and cultural perspectives to advance environmental stewardship and social adaptation. It welcomed about 150-200 participants from more than 20 countries and covered research under seven major themes, emphasising cross-theme connections to foster interdisciplinarity. PLAnT’s team members attended the conference and presented project results. The PI, Catarina Frazão Santos, presented two oral communications about “Climate-smart ocean planning in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean” and about “Climate-smart planning for megafauna on the move”. Postdoc Catarina Pereira Santos presented two other oral communications about “Navigating the governance landscape of the Southern Ocean: lessons from over sixty years of international collaboration” and about “Climate-driven compression of megafauna foraging grounds in a changing Southern Ocean”. Two posters were also presented, one by Postdoc Francisco Borges on “Species distribution modelling in the Southern Ocean” and another by the PI on “Marine spatial planning and marine protected area planning are not the same” — see below. The project PI served as a speaker on the Closing Panel "Conservation Policy and Management Across Ecosystems", chaired by Malin Pinsky, alongside Maria Dornelas, Lee Hannah, and Janice Ser Huay Lee.
