SCAR Open Science Conference
|
The SCAR Open Science Conference, organised by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), is held every two years and brings together polar researchers in all disciplines from around the world to present their work, network, and participate in SCAR’s scientific activities. The conference is a key platform for sharing the latest research findings, fostering collaborations, and addressing the critical challenges facing this southernmost region of the world. This year, the 12th SCAR OSC 2026 was held in Oslo, Norway, from August 8 to 19, 2026, gathering over 1,400 participants in person. With the overarching theme “Diving into Antarctic Science—Making Waves for the Future” and hosted by the Norwegian Polar Institute, the conference showcased cutting-edge polar research and inspired collaboration for a sustainable future. PLAnT’s team members attended the conference and presented project-related research in multiple sessions. A Plenary Mini-Symposium on “From Science-to-Policy: Climate-smart Marine Spatial Planning in the Southern Ocean” was also co-organised under PLAnT during the conference. 📍Oral Presentations: 🎤 Keynote in Session S41: Biodiversity Conservation by Francisco Oliveira Borges 🗺️ “Using ‘climate-smart’ species distribution modelling to identify potential conflicts between human uses and biodiversity in a changing Southern Ocean”. 🎤 Keynote in S18: Southern Ocean Top Predator Dynamics by Catarina Pereira Santos 🐋 “Climate-driven compression of megafauna foraging grounds in the Southern Ocean”. 📍Poster Presentations: 📊 In-person poster, Session S34: Antarctic Governance at the International and Domestic Level by Catarina Pereira Santos 1443 - “Navigating the governance discourse of the Southern Ocean to inform climate-smart ocean planning”. 📊 In-person poster, Session S18: Southern Ocean Top Predator Dynamics by Julia Werdenig (presented by Francisco Borges) 1058 - “Modelling the influence of anthropogenic pressures on the distribution of the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Southern Ocean”. 🌐 Digital poster, Session S25: Environmental Drivers, Human Impacts and Climate Change in Antarctic Ecosystems and Ecology by Francisco Oliveira Borges 1065 - “Species distribution modelling in the Southern Ocean in the context of marine spatial and conservation planning”. 🌐 Digital poster, Session S32: Antarctic Tourism: Aiming for a Sustainable Future by David Abreu dos Santos 1594 - “Stakeholders’ perceptions of coastal and marine tourism in Antarctica”. 🌐 Digital poster, Session S34: Antarctic Governance at the International and Domestic Level by Beatriz Sacadura Cabral 1433 - “Blue Justice in the Southern Ocean: exploring the Antarctic Treaty System discourse around justice and equity to inform sustainable ocean planning”. 🌐 Digital poster, Session S34: Antarctic Governance at the International and Domestic Level by Catarina Frazão Santos 1467 - “Climate-smart ocean planning and governance in the Southern Ocean”. 🌐 Digital poster, Session S36: Ethics and Politics in Antarctica: Nature, Animals and Conservation by Catarina Pereira Santos 1451 - “Exploring the ecology of the Southern Ocean governance discourse”. 🌐 Digital poster, Session S41: Biodiversity Conservation by Catarina Frazão Santos 1441 - “Key differences between marine spatial planning and marine protected area planning and a Southern Ocean case study”.
