​XVII Portuguese Polar Science Conference: ​Humans in the Polar Regions

This year, the XVII Portuguese Polar Science Conference focused on the topic “Humans in the Polar Regions”, highlighting the experiences, challenges, and impacts of human presence in polar and analogous environments. It took place at the University Lusófona in Lisbon, November 14 and 15, 2025.

PLAnT’s team members were at the conference, with four oral communications. On November 14, in Session A - Marine Environment Part 1, Postdoc Francisco Borges gave a presentation about “Species distribution modelling in the Southern Ocean: where we’re at, knowledge gaps, and challenges ahead.”

In Session E – Social and Human Sciences, the PI Catarina Frazão Santos presented “A preliminary participatory mapping processes to gather insights on the perceptions of key stakeholders of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean” and “Marine spatial planning and marine protected area planning are not the same: A conflation example from polar regions”, and Postdoc Catarina Pereira Santos presented “Navigating the governance landscape of the Southern Ocean: lessons from over sixty years of international collaboration.” 

Other team members present at the conference were 
Teresa Faria, David Abreu dos Santos and Beatriz Cabral.

n November 15, team members attended the 16th edition of the APECS Portugal Workshop: “Mission Polar: What’s Hot in Polar Science”, addressing the importance of initiatives to prepare for the upcoming International Polar Year and reflect on the future of polar science and areas of greatest interest to young scientists.
