XVII Portuguese Polar Science Conference: Humans in the Polar Regions The XVII Portuguese Polar Science Conference took place at the University Lusófona in Lisbon, in November 14 and 15, 2025. Focused on the topic “Humans in the Polar Regions”, the conference aimed to highlight the experiences, challenges, and impacts of human presence in polar and analogous environments. Several members of the PLAnT’s team were present at the conference, presenting four oral communications. On November 14, as part of Session A - Marine Environment Part 1, Francisco Borges gave a presentation on “Species distribution modelling in the Southern Ocean.” Afterwards, in Session E – Social and Human Sciences, Catarina Frazão Santos gave two presentations: (1) “A preliminary participatory mapping processes to gather insights from key stakeholders of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean” and (2) “Marine spatial planning and marine protected area planning are not the same”. Still in the same session, Catarina Pereira Santos gave a talk about “Navigating the governance landscape of the Southern Ocean: lessons from over sixty years of international collaboration.” Team members Teresa Faria and Beatriz Cabral were present throughout the day. On November 15, the team attended the 16th edition of the APECS Portugal Workshop: “Mission Polar: What’s Hot in Polar Science”, addressing the importance of initiatives to prepare for the upcoming International Polar Year and reflect on the future of polar science and areas of greatest interest to young scientists.
