Antarctic Ocean Use Survey

We are interested in learning from the Antarctic research and scientific community about how you use and value coastal and ocean areas in Antarctica.
You will be invited to draw on the map and indicate the relative value of areas to you. We also intend to explore perceptions about areas undergoing environmental and ecological change. We will use the SeaSketch platform (www.seasketch.org) to collect responses. SeaSketch is an interactive geographical information system tool optimised for spatial data collection and map-based discussions, widely used in spatial management and protection initiatives around the world to support stakeholder participation and engagement. Questions are adapted from those normally included in SeaSketch’s ocean use surveys to fit the specific purpose and audience of this study. The survey is being developed as part of project PLAnT and its results are intended to produce scientific information to support Antarctic spatial management, protection and governance under a rapidly changing world. Your individual responses will be kept confidential. We will summarize and generalize information across multiple respondents to protect your privacy. The information will be used to create data to be used in upcoming scientific studies. Your Participation We invite you to participate in the Antarctica ocean use and value survey. Participation should take approximately 15-20 minutes. Your participation is voluntary, and you have the right to refuse to participate or withdraw from participating at any time, without any negative consequences. If you choose to withdraw, your partial responses will not be included in the analysis. Collected data will be used for scientific purposes and published only in aggregated form and anonymised. For interested participants, we are offering co-authorship on the final scientific publication based on survey results, to be submitted to an international scientific journal. Sensitive personal data will not be collected, and all information received will be treated in strict compliance with European data protection and privacy regulations. For the purpose of quality control, the entity that processes the data may access the following personal information: name and/or email. This information will be used for this purpose only, never being associated with the answers you have provided, and being subsequently deleted. The survey script was approved by the Ethics Committee of CIÊNCIAS ULisboa in January 2026 (Ref. CEC/05/2026).
