Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings 2025 From June 23 to July 3, 2025, the 47th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 47) and the 27th Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 27) Meeting took place in Milan, Italy. Representatives from the 58 Consultative and Non-Consultative Parties to the Antarctic Treaty, along with Observers and Invited Experts were present, with a total of 450 Delegates registered. The project PI, Catarina Frazão Santos, attended both meetings as part of the Delegation of Portugal. The Delegation of Portugal, led by José Xavier (member of PLAnT’s Advisiory Board) submitted several oficial policy documents to be discussed at the meetings. One of such documents addressed the topic of climate-smart marine spatial planning (MSP) — Information Paper IP64, “Towards Climate-smart Marine Spatial Planning in the Antarctic Ocean” submitted with the Delegations of Canada, France, and IUCN. It was developed based on recent scientific papers published under project PLAnT. The PI presented Information Paper IP64 herself, both at the ATCM 47 (June 25) and at the CEP 27 meeting (June 26). In 2024, an initial Information Paper on the topic had already been presented by the Delegation of Portugal — Information Paper IP167, “Marine Spatial Planning for a sustainable and climate-resilient Antarctic Ocean” submitted with the Delegations of Canada, France, Italy, and IUCN. Several members of PLAnT’s Advisory Board were also present at the Antarctic Treaty meetings in Milan: Cassandra Brooks, José Xavier, Kevin Hughes, and Renuka Badhe.
