Marine Protected Areas in Marine Spatial Planning The International Conference Marine Protected Areas in Marine Spatial Planning (MPA in MSP International Conference), organized by the MPA Europe Project, took place in Bødo, Norway, from July 9 to 12, 2025. The conference covered topics from MSP integration to MPA planning, to climate change effects on marine biodiversity, blue carbon science, and spatial planning benefits. It brought together 180 participants from 23 different countries (from scientists and planners to policymakers and NGOs). It featured 50 oral presentations, 39 posters and 8 keynote talks. PLAnT’s team members were present at the conference to disseminate project results, from oral to poster communications. The PI, Catarina Frazão Santos, presented an oral presentation on why “MSP is not MPA planning: both are key for the sustainability of a rapidly changing ocean” based on the recently published paper at Nature npj Ocean Sustainability journal. Postdoc Francisco Borges gave an oral presentation about “How has ecological modelling integrated MPA, human uses, and threats to species in the Southern Ocean?” and presented a related poster. Postdoc Catarina Pereira Santos presented two poster communications, one on “Decoding the debate on Antarctica marine management” and another on “Misperceptions of marine spatial planning and conservation in polar regions” (with David Abreu dos Santos). A final poster, by PhD Student Miguel Fernandes, was presented on “Balancing conservation and use: insights from the Portuguese marine spatial planning process”. You can find the presented posters below. Find more on the MPA in MSP conference here: https://mpa-europe.eu/international-conference-on-marine-protected-areas-in-marine-spatial-planning |
