59th European Marine Biology Symposium

From July 7 to 10, 2026, Peniche, Portugal, will host the 59th European Marine Biology Symposium. This prestigious event is organized by the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology (ESTM) at the Polytechnic of Leiria, in collaboration with MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre.

The symposium will unfold at the ESTM coastal campus, featuring breathtaking views of the Berlengas Archipelago, a recognized UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The venue provides a state-of-the-art environment for scientific exchange, equipped with specialized auditoriums and full logistical coordination.

Phd student Miguel Fernandes is attending the symposium and presenting an oral communication in Session S3: Marine Conservation, Management & Policy - "Integrating Climate Risk and Vulnerability into Marine Spatial Planning: Insights from the Portuguese Case Study". His presentation will examine the repercussions of climate change on various maritime activities and its implications for marine governance. By introducing a multifaceted climate risk index that combines ecological, social, and economic factors, the study identifies specific risk hotspots within Portuguese waters. The index provides a versatile framework for incorporating climate-related considerations into ocean planning on a global scale.
