Biosfera Programme: The Cryosphere The polar ice caps of our planet are melting, from mountain peaks to the poles. In Antarctica, it is estimated that about 135 billion tonnes of ice melt each year. Record temperatures across the globe are accelerating the thaw, with consequences for local biodiversity, sea level, and the future of humanity. In the Biosfera episode launched on January 17, 2026, focused on the cryosphere (Ep. 2 | T24-Criosfera: Planeta em Colapso), Catarina Frazão Santos discussed her research in Antarctica related to project PLAnT. The episode also highlighted the XVII Portuguese Polar Science Conference held in November 2025, in which the PLAnT team strongly participated. Biosfera is a weekly TV programme that raises awareness on good environmental practices related to energy, biodiversity, and nature conservation. Find the full episode (in Portuguese only) below! |
