POLICY MEETING PARTICIPATIOn

Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings 2026

From May 11 to 21, 2026, the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 48) and the 28th Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 28) Meeting took place in Hiroshima, Japan.

Prior to the meetings, the 3rd Joint CEP/SC-CAMLR Workshop on Climate Change and Monitoring took place (May 8 and 9), focusing on coordinating efforts to address climate change impacts on Antarctic marine ecosystems, and serving as a key collaboration between the CEP and the Scientific Committee for CCAMLR.

Catarina Frazão Santos, attended both the meetings and the workshop as part of the Delegation of Portugal. The Delegation of Portugal submitted several oficial policy documents to be discussed at the meetings and the workshop.

Some of these documents addressed the topic of climate-smart ocean planning and were based on scientific publications under PLAnT. These were Information Paper IP 146, “Towards a climate-smart pathway for ocean management in Antarctica” and Workshop Paper XP 24 on "Climate-smart marine spatial planning in Antarctic Treaty waters".

The PI presented Information Paper IP 146 herself at the CEP 28 meeting (June 26). In 2024 and 2025, official policy documents on the topic had already been presented by the Delegation of Portugal.

Also at the meetings and workshop in Hiroshima, were José Xavier (Delegation of Portugal), Cassandra Brooks (SCAR) and Kevin Hughes (Delegation of the United Kingdom), members of PLAnT’s Advisory Board.
