Distinguishing Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Protected Area Planning
Two widely used management processes, MSP and MPA planning, are key to sustainability in a changing ocean, but they are not the same. This research brief is intended to inform decision-makers, marine managers, and practitioners on how to leverage synergies between MSP and MPA planning and move toward sustainability in a changing ocean.
The brief was developed in a collaboration between the Ocean Planning Lab (University of Lisbon) and the Oxford Seascape Ecology Lab (University of Oxford), and is based on the publication "Marine spatial planning and marine protected area planning are not the same, and both are key for sustainability in a changing ocean" published in npj Ocean Sustainability (here).
